Podcast Sources

The podcast is going to be about accepted and challenges to gender roles in Disney Marvel movies through the perspective of the development of Black Widow and Iron Man in Marvel's: The Avengers and Avengers: Endgame.

The Making of Marvel Studios 'Captain Marvel’:

This source is a podcast; the hosts are Sana Amanat and Judy Stephens. The main idea of the source is to look further into how ‘Captain Marvel’ was made and some special aspects that made it important. This idea is developed through two interviews, one with a director at Marvel in charge of this movie and the other with a fighter pilot general from the air force that worked with the actress that played Captain Marvel. Each interview was used to see a different aspect of how the film was created but they are important to my podcast because the topic of gender comes up quite a bit. I intend to use this source during the comparison segment of Black Widow and other female superheroes, specifically Captain Marvel, as well as in the female empowerment segment. The quote I think would be good to use is “Carol Danvers didn’t need fixing”(Mary Lavanos 2019). This quote can be used to show the significance of some actions Black Widow took in Avengers Endgame to her character in comparison to the idea that Carol is perfectly okay as herself and doesn’t need to prove that she is good without her powers.

Analyzing the Gender Representation of 34,476 Comic Book Characters:

This source is an article published by The Pudding and written by Amanda Shendruk. The main idea of this source is to show how female superheroes are included and depicted in comics because they show up less than male superheroes. This source looks at this idea through categories such as powers, percent of each gender in groups, and gendered names; it shows comparisons between men and females through charts so it’s more concise but also includes a summary paragraph after each category. I plan on using this source throughout the podcast because I think it gives good insight for both of the characters we are analyzing; for example when looking at their powers I can use this source to show that because of their powers they symbolize more a feminine or masculine character. I also think it’s a good source for comparison because both of these characters are in the Avengers, a team, which this article has a section about gender and groups. A quote I could use when explaining Black Widow is “ They are often hyper-sexualized, unnecessarily brutalized, stereotyped, and used as tokens”(Shendruk). This quote is talking about how comics tend to look at female characters. After this is a statistic about female versus male superheroes which I could also use when comparing the characters because Iron Man has already had 3 movies starring him while Black Widow is having her first released in 2021 even though they have both been in the Marvel Universe for almost the same amount of time.

Gender Portrayal in Marvel Cinematic Universe Films: Gender Representation, Moral Alignment, and Rewards for Violence:

This source is a dissertation written by Kristen Ray. This is a content analysis of Marvel with the focuses of gender representation, moral alignment, and rewards for violence. I will be using it as a source specifically for the gender representation sections but there is valuable information throughout the other sections of the essay. The main way I want to use this source is to look at Black Widow. Her “powers” are basically all combat abilities, she doesn’t have anything “super” about her. This essay says “When being violent, females are sometimes masculinized (Eschholz & Bufkin, 2001)” (Ray 2020). I plan on using this as a way to explain why Black Widow tends to dress in tight fitting and sexualized clothes; there’s a connection between her powers and the way she physically appears in films.
